Trash Plant Photos

Artificial Obsolescence and Hope (AO&H) is a project devised to illustrate current trends in society and to suggest hopeful solutions. The grounds of Distinctive Gardens will be transformed by Ms. Kastello’s three advanced art classes. The front half of the grounds will detail the Current Trends segment of the project The back half will be home for the Hope side of the art installation.
The following are students thoughts on the environment and the project in general.
The Current Trends (Artificial Obsolescence) side of the project will feature: Tree Jewelry, and Plant Trash projects. This side of the project will illustrate aspects of our throw-away society.

this is my tree that i made out of copper pipe and other random objects for a trash plant. these pictures show the progress of my tree and hopefully i can keep posting pictures as it progresses. the message that i wanted to send was that for thousands of years we have been a throw away society and in my peice i want to use old trash and new to see how we have evolved in what we decide is no longer of good use.

When we were given the bags of objects at random, I was a bit baffled as to what I should do. We had to make some sort of plant, and I was given fake plants and some tin foil, and I wasn’t exactly certain how I could make something look like a plant that already is a plant while changing it from its original form. I think the result was a bit plain, but slightly interesting I suppose.
I made flowers out of trash. I believe my flowers turned out very good and I was super happy with them. I used pop cans and cords to make them. I cut the cans to form flowers and used the left overs as leaves. I made them pretty and colorful by using a combination of different colored cans. To think i made such pretty things out of trash.

An issue that really bugs me is littering. I believe almost everyone is guilty of this (I know I am). We may be in a hurry and grab somethng to eat on the go and not that you have enough items to carry into school or work, you causally throw your wrapper out the window. Can you imagine how nice the world would be if everyone threw out there trash were it belongs? We have garbage men, trash cans and recycle centers for a reason…If everyone didn’t care about living in filth then these men (or women) wouldn’t have a job. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of people who care about environment, but there are more that don’t. It’s also nice to see that we have the adopt a highway system….where companies, schools, and organizations volunteer there time to clean up a mile of the roadway. They all feel so proud of themselves when they have completed there task, but if people hadn’t thrown there trash to begin with we wouldn’t have such a program. Shouldn’t these people feel proud of themselves when they throw away there trash in the proper place? It really isn’t that hard to start making the world a better place for everyone.
One of my most important environmental issues is the ozone layer. It’s a huge issue because it effects everyone on earth, and there health. You can already tell that global warming is taking effect. Teh ice caps are melting and the oceans are becoming warmer is certain areas where they where once frozen. To me that’s a major issue. Once the ozone layer is gone, it’s gone. You can simply throw away a piece a trash you see laying on the ground, and it will never effect that area again because it’s gone, but with the ozone layer it is not that easy. Things are are now being done to help such as filtering the air, and building cars with a more environmentally safe exaust. Just these small things don’t have much of an effect on such a huge world, but I do know that much more could be done by making safer house chemicals, and restricting the use of some items.
